Five Facts, Five Opinions.

MP Expense Scandal

Facts:
  • Leaked by the Telegraph Group in 2009.
  • Resulted in a large number of resignations, sackings, de-selections and retirement announcements.
  • Bernard Jenkin was ordered to pay the most, at £63, 250.
  • Each MP recieved a letter whether or not they would be required to repay any expenses they had claimed.
  • Gordon Brown was Prime Minister at the time of the leak of the scandal.
Opinions:
  • Conservative MP, Nadine Dorries said many of her colleagues "feared a suicide".
  • David Cameron said, "I want to say sorry it has come to this and sorry for the actions of some Tory MPs"
  • Stewart Jackson, Conservative MP said, "The pool came with the house and I needed to know how to run it".
  • Nick Robinson, BBC Political Editor said, "What was unthinkable just a few weeks ago has suddenly become unavoidable."
  • Michael, British Citizen said, "They chose their 'job' and no one is forcing them to do it. Pay them a wage and that's it. That's how the rest of us work".
